This year is the 84th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The fighting around Rethymno will be commemorated in a series of events, listed below.

18:00 Memorial Service & reception at Armeni in the memory of the Greek Police General Stylianos Menioudakis (Armeni village, Municipality of Rethymno).
19:30 Memorial Service at the Preveli memorial. Following memorial service, guided tour at the Preveli Monastery.

10:00 Memorial Service at Latzimas (Prinos village, Municipality of Rethymno).
11:30 Memorial Service at Stavromenos (Stavromenos village, Municipality of Rethymno).

Following on from the success of the Battle of Menin Road, the 4th and 5th Australian Divisions took over from the 1st and 2nd Divisions to launch the attack at Polygon Wood. But the day before the battle is to commence, a strong German counter attack seized the ground which elements of the 15th Brigade were to attack from. It was a precarious situation which needed to be rectified immediately or else the whole attack could be thrown into confusion.
