The Romans founded the settlement of Londinium however only 13 years later in 60 CE it was destroyed by Boudicca. It was rebuilt and soon became one of the largest Roman settlements in Britain.

The chaos of the Napoleonic wars in Europe cut the direct links between Spain and its American colonies, allowing decolonisation to begin. Argentina gained independence in 1810, with most other territories following within the next 20 years.

A regular soldier who rose to the rank of Colonel prior to the First World War, his skill saw him promoted to Marshal of France. He dealt with the plummeting morale in the French army in 1917 with harsh punishments, alongside granting more leave and improving the food.
