McTaggart was a Scottish landscape and marine painter who was influenced by Impressionism. McTaggart was fascinated with nature and the human relationship to it, and painted in a similar style to Constable and Turner, both artists whom he admired.

Born in Saxony, Germany in 1844 Nietzsche became one of the leading philosophers of the 19th century. Also well known for his quote “That which does not kill us makes us stronger”. He was not the best example of his own philosophy, having a mental breakdown at age 44. He didn’t produce any further works and died 10 years later.

A regular contributor of articles for magazines, she also published five novels. She was an early feminist writer, arguing that industrialisation tended to free women from domestic tyranny.

Initially promoted as a way of removing European empires, it quickly became clear that a Japanese imperial overlord was dramatically worse.

Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, the novel depicts narrator Nick Carraway's interactions with Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire obsessed with reuniting with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan. The novel was inspired by Fitzgerald's experiences on Long Island in the early 1920s.
